He was joined by John Cody from General Dynamics, Cherie LeBlanc from Research In Motion and Ross MacDougal from Concertia Technologies.
The event was chronicled by a cross section of print, radio and TV media. Below is an extract from METRO:
LINDSAY JONES, METRO HALIFAX November 07
A plunge in computer science enrolments is creating a looming labour shortage in the information technology industry, says Dalhousie University. Dal held a panel discussion yesterday with industry leaders to discuss the potential shortage that it says could impact government and health care, banking, telecommunications industries.
Jules Fauteux, chair of the Dalhousie faculty of Science Industry Advisory Board, said there is already a skills shortage for systems analysts, computer programmers and multi-media web designers. And a labour shortage in the recession-proof industry is looming. He said labour forecasts predict an additional 1,200 information and communications technology jobs per year in the region. “If you assume that half of the supply to meet that demand will come from university graduates, we’ll have a difficult time meeting that five years from now if we don’t increase enrolment,” Fauteux said.
Enrolments in computer science programs across the country dropped 45 per cent after the 2001 dot-com crash. Michael Shepherd, dean of the faculty of computer science, said one theory why enrolment is down is that people were unnecessarily spooked about going into the field after the crash.
